In 1836 the canal was meant to be a pathway that would feed goods into and out of Indianapolis, much like today's major railroads or interstates. Construction of the Indiana Central Canal began in 1836. It was originally intended to run a total of 296 miles, which would have connected the Wabash and Erie Canal to the Ohio River. Today the canal is a popular spot for recreation and cultural exploration.
